When to Switch from AC to Heat in Georgia

November 10, 2025 • 6 min read

November in Middle Georgia is unpredictable — 75° one week, frost the next. Switching your system at the right time prevents unnecessary wear and catches problems before the first real cold front.

The General Rule for Warner Robins

When nighttime lows consistently drop below 55°F for several days, it's time to test your heat mode. For most homes, that happens between mid-November and early December.

Test Heat Before You Need It

Run your system in heat mode for 15 minutes on a mild day. Check that warm air comes from every vent and that there are no burning smells (a brief dust smell on first run is normal). If heat doesn't kick on within a few minutes, call for service now — not when it's 28° outside.

Heat Pump vs. Gas Furnace Considerations

Heat pump owners can often delay switching longer since heat pumps handle mild Georgia winters efficiently. Gas furnace owners should test earlier — ignition systems and heat exchangers need verification before heavy use.

Don't Forget the Thermostat

Switch the mode from "Cool" to "Heat" or "Auto." If you have a programmable thermostat, update your schedule for shorter days and cooler mornings. Smart thermostats often handle this automatically but verify your settings.
